When does a winter tire start?
Every year you should check when you need to replace your winter tires. Winter tires are officially starting on 1.12. and lasts until the last day of February. So during this time, winter tires are a must have under the car.
Studded tires may be used 1.11. starting if slippery weather so requires. Studded rings are allowed on Easter Mondays the following Monday.
The use of studded tires is legally permissible when the roads are so slippery that other tires would pose a clear safety risk. In practice, this means that the pins should be put under as soon as the temperature drops to frost and the road surfaces freeze.
What kind of winter tires – that is, studded tires or friction tires?
Winter tires are a Finnish invention and have been in cars for 80 years. The first winter tires had metallic chains, which are still used in some southern European countries. The studs saw the light of day in the 1960s and as early as the 1970s, the studs came into force.
In addition to studded tires, friction tires are used as winter tires, the grip of which is based on the lamellae, ie the longitudinal and transverse grooves, which are more abundant than the studded tires. Also, the rubber compound in these tires is different than the stud tire.
Winter tires have precise specifications. For winter tires, a minimum tread depth of 3.0 mm is required for the width of the main grooves in the tire pattern. And it is not a bad thing at all if the groove depth is 5 – 6 millimeters.
Winter tires differ in their traction. Friction tires have better grip on snowy roads. Studded tires hold better on icy roads. Many Finns still have the greatest confidence in studded tires.
